Kazakhstan's ARAL Sea is a landlocked body of water located between Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan. It was once the fourth-largest lake in the world, but has since shrunk to less than 10% of its original size due to the diversion of its feeder rivers for irrigation and other human activities. The ARAL Sea has been called one of the planet's worst environmental disasters, with its salinity levels increasing and its fish population declining.
