John Paul II, originally known as Karol Wojtyla, was a Polish Roman Catholic priest who served as the Pope of the Catholic Church from 1978 until his death in 2005. He was the first non-Italian pope in 455 years and the first ever from a Slavic nation. He is remembered for his conservative views on social issues, his opposition to communism, and his efforts to improve relations between the Catholic Church and other religions.
