Joan of Arc, for one, is a French HEROINE and MARTYR who lived in the 15th century. She is remembered for leading the French army to victory against the English during the Hundred Years' War. She was later captured by the Burgundians and sold to the English, who tried her for heresy and burned her at the stake. She is now considered a national symbol of France and is venerated as a saint by the Catholic Church.
