The Japanese Legislature is commonly referred to as the DIET. The DIET is a bicameral legislature composed of two houses: the House of Representatives and the House of Councillors. It is the highest organ of state power and the sole law-making organ of the state. The DIET is responsible for enacting laws, approving the national budget, ratifying treaties, and electing the Prime Minister. The DIET has the power to override vetoes by the Prime Minister or other senior government officials.
