Japanese-American is a term used to describe people of Japanese ancestry who were born in the United States. Nisei, Issei, and Sansei are terms used to describe different generations of Japanese-Americans. Nisei refers to the second generation of Japanese-Americans, those born in the United States to at least one parent who was an immigrant from Japan. Issei refers to the first generation of Japanese-Americans, those who immigrated from Japan to the United States. Sansei refers to the third generation of Japanese-Americans, those born in the United States to two parents who were both born in the United States.
