James Knox Polk was the 11th President of the United States, serving from 1845 to 1849. He was a member of the Democratic Party and the last strong President until the Civil War. He is remembered for his foreign policy successes, including the annexation of Texas, the negotiation of the Oregon Treaty with Great Britain, and the settlement of the Oregon boundary dispute with Britain. He also secured the passage of the Walker Tariff, which lowered tariffs on imported goods.
