Ohio was part of the Northwest Territory, which was an area of land in the United States that was established by the Congress of the Confederation in 1787. Ohio was one of the original states that was part of the Northwest Territory, along with Indiana, Illinois, Michigan, Wisconsin, and part of Minnesota. The Northwest Territory was eventually divided into smaller territories and states as the population of the region grew.
