Ascension is an island in the South Atlantic Ocean, located approximately 1, 000 miles from the coast of Africa. It is part of the British Overseas Territory of Saint Helena, ASCENSION and Tristan da Cunha and is the largest of the three islands. The island is home to a small population of around 1, 000 people, mostly employed by the British military. It is also home to a large number of seabirds, including the ASCENSION frigatebird.
