Eamon de Valera was an Irish statesman who served as the third President of Ireland from 1959 to 1973. He was also a leader of the Irish War of Independence and a founder of the Fianna Fáil political party. De Valera was born in New York City in 1882, but moved to Ireland at the age of two. He was educated at Blackrock College and the Royal University of Ireland, and later became a mathematics teacher. He was a key figure in the Easter Rising of 1916, and was imprisoned for his involvement. After his release, he became a prominent figure in the Irish War of Independence and was elected President of Dáil Éireann in 1919. He was a major proponent of the Anglo-Irish Treaty of 1921, which established the Irish Free State. He served as Taoiseach (Prime Minister) from 1932 to 1948 and again from 1951 to 1954. He was elected President of Ireland in 1959 and served until 1973.
