The AMANA Colonies were seven villages located in east-central Iowa, and the AMANA Society was a Christian communal society that practiced religious piety, communal living, and separation from the outside world. The AMANA Society was founded by a group of German Pietists who had emigrated from Germany to the United States in the early 19th century. The AMANA Colonies were established as a self-sufficient community, and the members of the AMANA Society lived communally, sharing resources and labor. The AMANA Society was disbanded in 1932, but the AMANA Colonies remain a popular tourist destination today.
