Elisha Otis was an American inventor who is best known for inventing the first safety elevator in 1852. He is credited with revolutionizing the transportation industry and making skyscrapers possible. Otis was born in Halifax, Vermont in 1811 and worked as a mechanic before becoming an inventor. He founded the Otis Elevator Company in 1853 and his invention quickly became popular in the United States and Europe.
