The term 'Instrument of Torture' refers to any device or method used to inflict pain or suffering on another person. Two examples of such instruments are the RACK and the thumbscrew. The RACK was a medieval torture device consisting of a wooden frame with rollers at either end, onto which the victim was tied and then stretched until their joints were dislocated. The thumbscrew was a device used to crush the thumbs or fingers of the victim, usually by tightening a screw or vice-like mechanism. Both of these instruments were used to extract confessions or other information from victims, and were widely employed during the Middle Ages.
