India's first Prime Minister was Jawaharlal Nehru, who served from 1947 to 1964. He was a leader of the Indian independence movement and was known for his secular and socialist views. He was also the founder of the Non-Aligned Movement. He was affectionately known as 'Pandit Nehru' due to his roots in the Kashmiri Pandit community. He was also the grandfather of India's current Prime Minister, Narendra Modi.
