An Issei is an immigrant from Japan. The term Issei is derived from the Japanese language and literally translates to 'first generation'. Issei are the first generation of Japanese immigrants to settle in a foreign country, typically the United States. They are distinct from Nisei, or second-generation Japanese immigrants, and Sansei, or third-generation Japanese immigrants. Issei immigrants often faced discrimination and hardship due to their foreign status, but many were able to find success and build a life for themselves in their new home.
