Myra Hess was a British pianist and composer who was made a Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire in 1935. She was known for her performances of classical music, particularly works by Johann Sebastian Bach, and for her efforts to keep classical music alive during World War II. She organized over 2, 500 concerts at the National Gallery in London during the war, which were attended by thousands of people.
