Grown elver is a term used to describe the juvenile stage of the European EEL (Anguilla anguilla). It is the stage between the larval and adult stages, and is characterized by the EEL's transition from a transparent, leaf-like shape to a more snake-like form. During this stage, the EEL will migrate from its spawning grounds in the Sargasso Sea to its freshwater habitats in Europe and North Africa. Grown elver is an important part of the EEL's life cycle, as it is the only stage in which the EEL can be harvested for human consumption.
