Groups of whales are typically referred to as pods or GAMS. A pod is a group of whales that usually consists of two to fifteen individuals, while a gam is a larger group of whales that can contain up to hundreds of individuals. Pods and GAMS are often formed by family members, such as mothers and their calves, or by other social bonds. Whales in pods and GAMS often travel together, communicate with each other, and hunt for food together.
