A MOLECULE is a group of atoms bound together. It is the smallest unit of a substance that can exist independently and still retain the chemical properties of that substance. Molecules are composed of two or more atoms held together by covalent bonds, which are formed when atoms share electrons. Molecules can range in size from the very small, such as water molecules, to the very large, such as proteins.
