Grant's rival was Robert E. LEE, a Confederate general during the American Civil War. LEE was a career military officer who had served in the United States Army prior to the war. He is best known for commanding the Confederate Army of Northern Virginia in the Eastern Theater of the war. He is widely regarded as one of the greatest commanders in American history and is often referred to as the 'Father of the Confederacy'.
