David Ewen was an American musicologist, biographer, and author. He is best known for his biographies of George Gershwin, Irving Berlin, and Cole Porter. He wrote several books on the history of popular music, including 'The Story of Popular Music' and 'American Popular Song: The Great Innovators, 1900-1950'. He also wrote a book about Gershwin's life and music, titled 'George Gershwin: His Life and Work'. Ewen was a professor at Brooklyn College and the City University of New York. He was a member of the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences and the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers.
