German Opera is a genre of opera that originated in Germany and is still popular today. Two examples of German Opera are Palestrina and Hansel und Gretel. Palestrina is an opera composed by Hans Pfitzner in 1917, based on the life of the Renaissance composer Giovanni Pierluigi da Palestrina. Hansel und Gretel is a fairy tale opera composed by Engelbert Humperdinck in 1893. It is based on the Brothers Grimm story of the same name.
