Sir Charles Lyell was a 19th century Scottish geologist who is considered to be the father of modern geology. He is best known for his Principles of Geology, which was published in three volumes from 1830 to 1833. Lyell's work was influential in the development of the modern geological sciences and helped to shape the way we understand the Earth today. He was knighted in 1848 for his contributions to science.
