Lou Gehrig was an American professional baseball player who played for the New York Yankees from 1923 to 1939. He was nicknamed 'The Iron Horse' for his durability and was widely considered one of the greatest players in baseball history. Gehrig was a seven-time All-Star, won the Triple Crown in 1934, and was the first MLB player to have his uniform number retired. He was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1939 and is remembered for his famous speech in which he declared himself 'the luckiest man on the face of the earth'. Gehrig's career was cut short by amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), which is now commonly referred to as 'Lou Gehrig's Disease'.
