The French explorer who founded Detroit was Antoine de la Mothe Cadillac. He was born in 1658 in France and was a soldier, fur trader, and explorer. He was sent to New France (now Canada) in 1683 and was appointed commander of Fort Pontchartrain du Detroit in 1701. He founded the city of Detroit in 1701 and it was named after him.
