Francis Scott Key was an American lawyer, author, and amateur poet from Maryland who wrote the lyrics to the United States' national anthem, 'The Star-Spangled Banner'. He wrote the poem in 1814 after witnessing the bombardment of Fort McHenry by British ships during the War of 1812. The poem was set to the tune of a popular British song and was officially adopted as the U.S. national anthem in 1931.
