France, formerly known as GAUL, was a region of Western Europe during the Iron Age and Roman era. It was inhabited by Celtic tribes, and later conquered by the Roman Empire in the first century BC. After the fall of the Roman Empire, the area was divided into several smaller kingdoms, until it was unified in the Middle Ages. Today, France is one of the most powerful countries in Europe, and is a major player in international politics.
