Ezra Cornell was an American businessman and philanthropist who founded Cornell University in 1865. He was born in Westchester County, New York in 1807 and made his fortune as a successful entrepreneur in the telegraph industry. He was also a prominent abolitionist and a strong supporter of the Union during the Civil War. He donated much of his wealth to the founding of Cornell University, which is now one of the most prestigious universities in the world.
