A fossil preserver is a person or thing that preserves fossils. TAR, with three letters, is a dark, viscous material derived from the destructive distillation of organic substances such as wood, coal, or peat. AMBER, with five letters, is a fossilized tree resin that has been appreciated for its color and natural beauty since Neolithic times. Tarpit, with six letters, is a type of fossil deposit that preserves soft-bodied organisms such as insects and small vertebrates. All three of these terms are associated with the job of a fossil preserver.
