The former New York Stadium was known as Shea Stadium, named after William A. Shea, a prominent lawyer and sports promoter who was instrumental in bringing National League baseball back to New York City. It was the home of the New York Mets from 1964 to 2008 and hosted two World Series championships in 1969 and 1986. The stadium was demolished in 2009 and replaced by Citi Field.
