A forced-labour camp is a type of prison where inmates are required to work, often in harsh conditions. The term 'Gulag' is a Russian acronym for the Main Administration of Corrective Labour Camps and Colonies, which was the Soviet agency responsible for the administration of the forced-labour camps in the Soviet Union from 1930 to 1960. These camps were used to incarcerate political prisoners, criminals, and other people deemed undesirable by the Soviet government. Inmates were subjected to hard labour, inadequate food and medical care, and harsh living conditions.
