The term 'FLYING EAGLE, E.G.' is a reference to the Flying Eagle CENT, a one-CENT coin minted in the United States from 1856 to 1858. It was designed by Chief Engraver James B. Longacre and was the first small-size silver coin issued by the U.S. Mint. The obverse of the coin features an eagle in flight, while the reverse features a wreath of corn, wheat, maple, and oak leaves. The Flying Eagle CENT was replaced by the Indian Head CENT in 1859.
