John Tyler was the first unelected president of the United States. He became president after the death of William Henry Harrison in 1841. Tyler was a member of the Whig Party and had served as Vice President under Harrison. He was the first Vice President to assume the presidency upon the death of a sitting president. Tyler served as president for the remainder of Harrison's term, but was not re-elected. He is remembered for his support of states' rights and his opposition to the Second Bank of the United States.
