The first Secretary of War was Henry Knox, who served from 1785 to 1794. He was an American soldier and statesman who served in the Continental Army during the Revolutionary War and was later appointed by President George Washington to serve as the first Secretary of War. Knox was responsible for organizing the new nation's military forces and establishing the War Department. He also worked to improve the army's supply system and helped to create the first national armory.
