John Tyler was the first non-elected president of the United States. He assumed office in 1841 after the death of William Henry Harrison, who had been elected president in 1840. Tyler was a member of the Whig Party and served as vice president under Harrison. He was the first vice president to become president due to the death of his predecessor. Tyler's presidency was marked by controversy and he was eventually expelled from the Whig Party. He is remembered for his support of states' rights and for his opposition to the Second Bank of the United States.
