The Olmec were the first Mexican pyramid-builders, and are considered to be the earliest known major civilization in Mesoamerica. They flourished from around 1200 BCE to 400 BCE, and their culture was centered around the Gulf of Mexico. The Olmec built several large pyramids, which were used for religious ceremonies and other rituals. They also developed a writing system, and created many sculptures and artifacts.
