The first Chief Justice of the United States was John JAY, who served from 1789 to 1795. He was a Founding Father and a prominent political leader in New York during the American Revolution. He was also a diplomat and served as Secretary of Foreign Affairs under the Articles of Confederation. JAY was a strong advocate for the ratification of the Constitution and was appointed by President George Washington to serve as the first Chief Justice of the Supreme Court.
