The first Asian-American Cabinet Member was Elaine Chao, who served as the 24th United States Secretary of Labor from 2001 to 2009. She was the first Asian-American woman to be appointed to a President's Cabinet in American history. Chao was also the first Asian-American to serve as Director of the Peace Corps and Deputy Secretary of Transportation. She was the longest-serving Secretary of Labor since World War II.
