Ezra Cornell was an American businessman, politician, philanthropist, and the founder of Cornell University. He was also a financier, having made his fortune in the telegraph industry. He was a major investor in the Western Union Telegraph Company, which he helped to found. He was also a major investor in the Atlantic and Pacific Telegraph Company, which he helped to found. He was a major benefactor of Cornell University, donating much of his wealth to the school.
