FINANCIER ANDREW MELLON is an American banker, industrialist, philanthropist, and art collector. He was born in 1855 and was the founder of the Mellon banking and industrial empire. He served as Secretary of the Treasury from 1921 to 1932 under Presidents Harding, Coolidge, and Hoover. During his tenure, he reduced the national debt, stabilized the currency, and established the Federal Reserve System. He also founded the Mellon Institute of Industrial Research, which later became Carnegie Mellon University. He was a major philanthropist, donating millions of dollars to educational and cultural institutions.
