Feudatory is a term used to describe a relationship between two parties in which one party, the vassal, is subordinate to the other, the lord. The vassal is expected to provide services to the lord in exchange for protection and other benefits. Feudatory relationships were common in medieval Europe and were often established through a formal ceremony known as homage. Feudatory relationships were also common in other parts of the world, such as India and China.
