Fax forerunners are two technologies that preceded the fax machine. Telexes, which had seven letters, were a system of teleprinters that allowed for the transmission of text-based messages over telephone lines. Teletypes, which had nine letters, were similar to telexes but used a more advanced technology. Both of these technologies allowed for the transmission of messages over long distances and laid the groundwork for the development of the fax machine.
