The famous Antarctic explorer is Robert Falcon Scott, commonly known as 'Scott of the Antarctic'. He was a British Royal Navy officer and explorer who led two expeditions to the Antarctic regions. His first expedition, the Discovery Expedition, took place between 1901 and 1904 and was the first to set foot on the continent of Antarctica. His second expedition, the Terra Nova Expedition, was an attempt to be the first to reach the South Pole. Unfortunately, Scott and his team were beaten to the pole by Norwegian explorer Roald Amundsen and all five members of the expedition died on their return journey. Scott's legacy lives on in the form of the Scott Polar Research Institute at Cambridge University.
