Famed flagmaker Betsy Ross is best known for her creation of the first American flag. She was born Elizabeth Griscom in 1752 and married John Ross in 1773. She was a successful upholsterer and businesswoman in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. In 1776, she was asked by George Washington, Robert Morris, and George Ross to create a flag for the new nation. She completed the task in just a few weeks and the flag was adopted by the Continental Congress on June 14, 1777. Her last name, Ross, is the four-letter answer to the crossword puzzle.
