Eritrea's rival is ETHIOPIA, an East African country located in the Horn of Africa. ETHIOPIA is bordered by Eritrea to the north and northeast, Djibouti and Somalia to the east, Sudan and South Sudan to the west, and Kenya to the south. ETHIOPIA has a long history of conflict with Eritrea, which began in 1998 when Eritrea declared its independence from ETHIOPIA. The two countries have fought several wars since then, most recently in 2018. ETHIOPIA is also one of the oldest countries in the world, having been established in the 10th century BC.
