Mae Jemison was an Endeavour Astronaut who made history as the first African-American woman to travel in space. She was born in Decatur, Alabama in 1956 and graduated from Stanford University with a degree in chemical engineering. She also earned a medical degree from Cornell University and worked as a Peace Corps medical officer in Sierra Leone and Liberia. In 1992, she became the first African-American woman to be accepted into the astronaut program and flew aboard the Space Shuttle Endeavour in September of that year.
