An empty area is a space that is not filled with anything. The term can be used to describe a variety of different places, such as a CAVITY, which is a small hole or depression in a surface; a CAVERN, which is a large, naturally-occurring underground space; a VALLEY, which is a low area between two mountains or hills; a VACUITY, which is an empty space or void; an EXCAVATION, which is a large hole made by digging; and whitespace, which is an area of a page that is left blank.
