Otis was an American inventor and industrialist who is widely credited as the pioneer of the modern elevator. He invented the safety elevator in 1852, which revolutionized the transportation of people and goods in buildings. His invention was the first to feature a safety brake that would stop the elevator if the hoisting rope broke. This invention made elevators much safer and more reliable, and it is still used in elevators today.
