Electrical surge, also known as a SPIKE, is an increase in voltage or current beyond the normal range of an electrical circuit. It is usually caused by a sudden increase in power from an external source, such as lightning or a power outage. Electrical surges can cause damage to electrical equipment and can even cause fires. To protect against electrical surges, surge protectors are used to divert the excess energy away from the electrical system.
