Gamal Abdel Nasser was the second President of Egypt, serving from 1956 until his death in 1970. He was a major figure in the 1952 overthrow of the monarchy and was instrumental in the subsequent transition to a republic. Nasser is remembered for his role in the 1956 Suez Crisis, the 1969 Egyptian–Israeli War, and his promotion of Arab nationalism. He is also credited with modernizing Egypt and improving its infrastructure.
