Edo, now known as TOKYO, is the capital of Japan. It was formerly known as Edo and was the seat of power for the Tokugawa shogunate from 1603 to 1868. During this period, Edo grew from a small fishing village into one of the largest cities in the world with a population of over one million people. Today, TOKYO is the most populous metropolitan area in the world and is the center of Japanese culture and economy.
